New Science StandardsThe State Board of Education adopted the new science standards on Tuesday, November 10th, 2015. This is huge news for school districts, teachers, universities, and other organizations. Note that the standards are called Michigan Science Standards (MiSS for short) and not Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). They adopted portions of the NGSS with modifications. If they adopted NGSS in its entirety then there would have been less flexibility for state-level changes. Similar to shifts that happen when the Common Core Readiness Standards were adopted for Math, there will be shifts in the science standards as well. This will be discussed more below.
M-STEP is almost here! Are you preparing your students? Information about the M-STEP has been pouring in over the last two months. Questions about the mathematics portions of the assessment are being answered and we now have a direction to help our students. Michigan just recently changed their college entrance exam from ACT to SAT after a competitive bidding process. The College Board, which oversees the SAT, received a three-year contract with the state of Michigan worth about $17.1 million. Juniors in the Spring of 2016 will be the first to take the new assessment. Michigan, mandated by law, will still be providing this test for free.
